Heavenly Spirits, a growing Massachusetts based importer specializing in award winning distilled spirits from France, is preparing to welcome its newest star. Blanche Armagnac, (White Armagnac) produced by Armagnac Delord is expected to find its way onto the shelves of certain exceptional US liquor retailers by mid October. According to Paul F. Pacult, noted spirit reviewer and publisher of The Spirit Journal, "Delord Blanche d’Armagnac is a “Delicious unaged Armagnac” and “The most iconic, elegant blanche d’armagnac I’ve evaluated thus far.” Mr. Pacult wrapped up the recent review with his highest recommendation and a five star rating. The entire review can be read in the September 2010 issue of the Spirit Journal.
White or unaged Armagnac can be enjoyed in a number of ways, including straight-up, chilled, or as a delightful variation to any vodka drink. And this white spirit is more than just a trend; it is the newest official AOC in the Armagnac region with “AOC” standing for Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée. According to http://www. Armagnac. fr (http://www. Armagnac. fr), the official Armagnac website, “The BLANCHE is the renaissance of a traditional Armagnac eau-de-vie rekindled by the producers. Coming from the same Armagnac terroir, it is the result of a thousand year old savoir-faire of distillation.
A particular method of vinification and the selection of eau-de-vie during the distillation reveal particular fruity and floral aromas. In order to conserve these aromas and its crystal-clear aspect, it is then kept in inert containers. During its maturation, the producer works on the eau-de-vie to lower its alcoholic degree in order to bring out its fruitiness and roundness in the mouth. Lastly, and uniquely in the case of an AOC brandy, it is subject to an obligatory assessment that will authorize its commercialization.”
Heavenly Spirits imports a total of five lines of Armagnac, and for the past two years, has been recognized as the leading importer of Armagnac in the US. The brands Heavenly Spirits represents include: Armagnac Marie Duffau, Armagnac Delord, Armagnac Dartigalongue, Armagnac Artez and Armagnac Chauffe Coeur. Each line has its own unique qualities.
In addition to Armagnac, Heavenly Spirits imports award winning Cognac, Calvados, Absinthe, Pastis, Vodka and Rum. They currently distribute to twelve states, including: New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Texas, California, Illinois, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Georgia.
According to Sales Director, Christine Cooney, who was born in the Cognac region of France, “Armagnac is the company's fastest growing spirit in the US.” She believes it might have something to do with Armagnac celebrating its 700th anniversary in 2010, confirming it as the oldest distilled spirit in France. “Or”, adds Christine’s husband and co-owner, Dan Cooney, “It might just be a result of so many cognac and brandy drinkers finally discovering Armagnac’s true value.” In any case, part of the Cooney’s work is to spread the good word about French distillation methods. Considering themselves “French Spirit Ambassadors” as well as importers, they participate in educational seminars and tasting events in all of the states where their products are sold.
A total of nine Heavenly Spirits’ products recently won awards in one of the most prestigious tasting competitions in the world, the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. These winning products will be featured in a ticketed event open to the public, on October 15, at the Ultimate Cocktails & Spirits Blast being held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel Broadway Ballroom — Times Square, New York.
