Kim Cameron, PhD, professor and author of Positive Leadership: Strategies for Extraordinary Performance, will be featured on Total Career Success, an Internet show on VoiceAmerica Talk Radio Network, at 11 a. m. Central on Monday, April 26. The show is designed to inform listeners and encourage them to achieve their career goals by featuring experts and business leaders to provide advice on job search (http://www. betterjobbetterlife. com) and career advancement (http://www. totalcareersuccess. com). Kim Cameron shares how to reach beyond ordinary success to achieve extraordinary effectiveness, spectacular results, and performance far above the norm. In a concise, inspiring way, Cameron describes four specific positive leadership strategies and how to implement them:
•Enabling a positive climate
•Developing positive relationships
•Promoting positive communication
•Creating positive meaning
Kim Cameron shared, “Positive leadership is not about being a Polly Anna. It is not about ignoring or minimizing problems and obstacles, but about engendering that which is life-giving, elevating, and virtuous in organizations. It is what I call positively deviant leadership.”
For the most part, organizations are designed to foster stability, steadiness, and predictable conditions because Wall Street is quick to punish companies that are unpredictable in their performance. Consequently, organizations specify what is expected of employees, who reports to whom, what the goals are, what procedures are to be employed, what rules apply, how the work gets done, and what structures are in place. These things are intended to reduce variation and deviance. The result is that most organizations and most leaders focus on maintaining performance in the middle of the continuum.
Positively deviant leadership, on the other hand, focuses on fostering and enabling performance on the positive end of the continuum. It is oriented toward affirmative, extraordinary, virtuous performance, which is positively deviant!
Sheryl Dawson, show host shared, “Kim Cameron gives many examples of just how effective positive leadership can be as well as ways to actually enable the four key elements of climate, relationships, communication and meaning.”
Ken Dawson, Total Career Success show host added, “Accentuating the positive is an age old saying. Kim Cameron gives it new meaning and potential by demonstrating that a leader’s attitudes and behaviors can dramatically impact individual and organizational performance.”
Dawson added, “Positive leaders create a vision of abundance – a view of the future based on optimism and hope. In addition, they enhance intrinsic motivational factors and empowerment. The results are extraordinary.”
