For the most part, organizations are designed to foster stability, steadiness, and predictable conditions because Wall Street is quick to punish companies that are unpredictable in their performance. Consequently, organizations specify what is expected of employees, who reports to whom, what the goals are, what procedures are to be employed, what rules apply, how the work gets done, and what structures are in place. These things are intended to reduce variation and deviance. The result is that most organizations and most leaders focus on maintaining performance in the middle of the continuum.
Positively deviant leadership, on the other hand, focuses on fostering and enabling performance on the positive end of the continuum. It is oriented toward affirmative, extraordinary, virtuous performance, which is positively deviant!

About Kim Cameron, PhD
Kim Cameron is William Russell Kelly Professor of Management and Organization in the Ross School of Business and Professor of Higher Education in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cameron’s research on organizational downsizing, effectiveness, quality culture, organizational virtuousness, and the development of management skills has been published in more than 120 scholarly articles and in 13 academic books. The most recent include: Positive Organizational Scholarship (Berrett-Koehler, 2003), Competing Values Leadership (Edward Elgar, 2006), Leading with Values (Cambridge University Press, 2006), Making the Impossible Possible (Berrett Koehler, 2006), and Positive Leadership (Berrett Koehler, 2008). His current research focuses on the virtuousness of and in organizations and its relationships to organizational success. He is a co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship. Dr. Cameron received BS and MS degrees from Brigham Young University and MA and PhD degrees from Yale University. He served on the National Research Council and was a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar. He is a recipient of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society’s Outstanding Educator Award. He currently consults with and teaches executive programs for a variety of business, government, and educational organizations in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
