Luxury Cabo Real Estate Development Shows Sustainable Side

Quivira committed to "green" elements in all aspects

Los Cabos, Mexico (PRWEB) August 23, 2009

Quivira Los Cabos is proud to promote sustainable development and is committed to preserving the natural landscape of the oceanfront residential resort community. The Cabo real estate project's nonprofit arm has a four-pillar mission: to build homes with energy conservation in mind; reduce the environmental impact of building; protect the local ecology; and reinvest in the community. Quivira is proud to work through the Letty Coppel Foundation to accomplish the development's "green" initiatives.

"Sustainability is a core value of Quivira Los Cabos," says Ernesto Coppel, the community's developer. "We at Quivira believe it is critical to nurture the local environment, reinvest in the community and reduce the impact of development."

Sustainable Certification and Efforts
Quivira is working on Green Globe certification. The distinguished international designation is recognized worldwide for sustainable tourism. Upon being awarded the certification, Quivira will be independently recognized as sustainable.

Additionally, The Ritz-Carlton Residences at Quivira, Los Cabos is designed with energy conservation in mind. In fact, all aspects of the homes are focused on preservation. The Residences are stocked with ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances, including brand-name refrigerators and dishwashers. The refrigerators have a 90 percent energy efficiency and the refrigerant in them is reclaimed and recycled, thereby releasing no harmful emissions into the home. Home temperatures are kept comfortable by AC units that have the highest energy efficiency rating of any air conditioner available today.

Bathrooms feature low-flow faucets, shower heads and toilets, representing up to a 45 percent water savings and reducing water usage by 16,500 gallons of water per fixture per year. Windows and patio doors have Low-E glass and are also ENERGY STAR® qualified, meaning they exceed the minimum energy efficiency criteria for the climate region. Low-E glass lowers energy costs, helps homes stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, prevents fading of interior furnishings, and reduces condensation.

Quivira also produces its own potable water from desalinization plants. All waste water is treated through the treatment plants and reused for irrigation purposes. What's more, Quivira recharges the natural aquifers by injecting clean water into the subterrenial water system. Other green initiatives include recycling construction scrap materials, using non-toxic paint and adhesives, plus sourcing all material either locally or from the region.

Protecting the Fauna
The Letty Coppel Foundation's Marine Turtle Protection Program, managed by PROFEPA trained and certified Quivira staff, was created to protect the endangered sea turtles that migrate back to Los Cabos to nest between the months of July and December.

The program has a surveillance team to watch for nesting turtles and then provides a secure incubation area to plant and care for the sea turtle eggs. Once the little turtles have hatched, they are carefully freed into the sea. Last season, the program protected a total of 263 turtle nests and released close to 34,000 baby turtles. This year - during breeding season which started in late April - the first sea turtles were spotted on the Quivira shores.

In addition to the Marine Turtle Protection Program, the Cabo luxury home builder also participates in a surveillance programs for whales. Between December and March, the gentle giants of the sea can be seen from Quivira's spectacular bluffs as they hug the tip of the Baja Peninsula en route to warmer water to calve. While Gray whales are most often spotted, a variety of other species call Cabo's warm waters home, including Humpback, Sperm, and Blue Whales plus occasionally even Orcas.

Guarding the Flora
The developers are also taking measures to protect the amazing dunes within Quivira. The picturesque sand dunes, which interact with the ocean, play a critical role in the ecosystem. Protecting them ensures that both animal and plant life are unaffected. Also within the development are designated special wildlife paths giving residents and guests a front-row view of nature's beauty within the community.

In addition to these efforts, Quivira is also diligently protecting the property's natural plant life. Two on-site nurseries house, nurture, and re-grow plants that will then be re-planted along Quivira's calming walkways and spectacular landscaped vistas. These plants will also help with area beautification efforts within the local Los Cabos community.

Community Reinvestment
Quivira remains committed to the community. Efforts to improve the local area include community cleaning campaigns for local beaches, streets and parks; a graffiti reduction program through education and painting campaigns; and financial support to different organizations including DIF, Foundation Down, Padre Tovar, Christmas toy drive, support for emergency relief, and Los Cabos Children's Fund.
