Actress Marisol Nichols Returns To Her Hometown Of Chicago Armed with Effective Solutions to Society’s Problems. US Premiere of "ABLE International's World Solutions Exhibit - new solutions for drugs, education & criminal reform

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 11, 2006

Marisol Nichols, TV and Film star, who prepared for her role in Stephen Bochco's Blind Justice on ABC by beating the streets on patrol with the NYPD, has become a dedicated supporter of the effective solutions to society’s ills offered in the traveling “World Solutions Exhibition”, which she hosted at the Union League Club in her hometown of Chicago. The Exhibit is sponsored by the Association for Better Living and Education International and stopped in Chicago as part of its world tour.

It was during her experience with the NYPD that Ms. Nichols first witnessed the almost fruitless results of America’s current penal system. A system where dedicated law enforcement officers risk their lives to lock away criminals, only to have them re-released months, years or sometimes days later.

While Chicago’s crime rate has gone down between 1990 and 2000, the murder rate is above the national average. There are 125,000 gang members and drug sales in Chicago generate an estimated $500 billion per year. Illinois expenditures of $1.30 billion annually result in a 44% recidivism rate – criminals becoming more criminal.

Ms. Nichols – who has also starred in "Resurrection Boulevard", "Vegas Vacation", "Big Momma's House 2", ABC's "In Justice", and is about to start playing as the head of CTU on Fox TV's"24" - decided to help by providing effective life skills programs to inmates through Criminon, so that when offenders are released they become productive citizens instead of more hardened criminals. “The way you end social problems of criminality – individual by individual – is through these programs”, she said. “I support these programs because they are real help – real solutions.”

These solutions are found in the secular social betterment methodologies developed by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. The programs provide life-skills and criminal reform courses in a program called Criminon, a drug-free drug rehabilitation program called Narconon, Applied Scholastics International’s education and literacy programs, and The Way To Happiness Foundation for reversing the decline of moral standards. ABLE has serviced millions of people through their nearly 1000 programs in 121 countries.

Chicago’s Criminon group has provided services to 800 inmates in 58 prisons in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and Missouri. There is also a program in the Illinois Youth Center, which began in 2005 endorsed by State Representatives and Senators which is servicing 47 juveniles with 20 having graduated various of the programs that are offered.

Joining Ms. Nichols to help launch ABLE Chicago’s two-day exhibit are Illinois State Representative and co-Founder of the Illinois Legislature's Hispanic Caucus Edward Acevedo and ABLE International President Rena Weinberg.

The World Solutions exhibit is the first of its kind, comprising 2,700 square feet of state-of-the-art displays with video, each describing ABLE-supported social betterment programs. As well, the exhibit accommodates a seminar room and a film room to aid training.

ABLE International President Rena Weinberg said the World Solutions Exhibition offers not only workshops and training sessions as an orientation to the Hubbard-based social betterment programs but also a Needs Assessment service to help local, regional, provincial and federal agencies tailor programs to suit their specific needs.

For information on the ABLE World Solutions Exhibition, contact Dan Drach at (312) 218-2114. For information on Ms. Nichols’ media availability, contact ABLE International President Rena Weinberg at (323) 823-2062.

Sun Tzu, Dale Carnegie, and Steven Carter Top Brazil's Bestseller List

Sun Tzu, Dale Carnegie, and Steven Carter Top Brazil's Bestseller List

Two are gone and one hasn't written a book in almost ten years, yet all three authors dominate shelf space in Brazil's bookstores, topping the Country's biggest bestseller lists month after month.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 1, 2008

Going into a bookstore in Brazil is a bit like traveling back in time. Yes, you'll find J. K. Rowling and Paul Coelho, but the shelves are dominated by three iconic authors from the past. There are at least half a dozen different versions of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", piles of Dale Carnegie's positive-thinking classics, and at least two giant stacks of the Steven Carter/Julia Sokol self-help classics, "What Smart Women Know" and "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves."

Clearly the message being sent from this very progressive South American country is clear: New is not always better. These non-fiction classics have been topping the bestseller lists in Brazil for years, handily competing with every new book title that comes along.

Brazil has continued to surprise the world in recent years with its intelligent investments, particularly its investments in alternative fuels. And Brazil's women, the primary driver of book sales, have more discretionary income as they accumulate more wealth and independence in a rapidly transforming society. Clearly, Brazilian women are investing that money in books.

The Los Angeles Times recently published an article about Steven Carter's stunning success in Brazil. Carter's self-help classic, "What Smart Women Know" has been on every major bestseller list, including Epoca Magazine, Folha de S. Paulo, and Brazil's most prestigious list, Veja Magazine. Carter recently celebrated his 103rd week on the Veja list, a truly extraordinary accomplishment.

The 15-year old sequel to "What Smart Women Know", "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves", has been following right behind its sibling since it was released in Brazil in April of 2008.

Steven Carter's Brazilian publisher, Marcos Pereira, co-owner of the self-help/spirituality publishing company GMT Sextante (also publisher of one Sun Tzu translation), has not been completely surprised by Carter's feat. He knows how strongly Brazilian women are responding to well-written books with a psychological slant.

"The role of women in the Brazilian culture or economy has evolved," explained Pereira. "If you think of the U. S. 20 years ago, I think this is happening now in Brazil. Women are rethinking their roles, enjoying their independence, embracing their success." Translation: Brazilian women are taking the reins and using time-tested books to help them plan their futures.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Reaches Development Milestone

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Reaches Development Milestone

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education has awarded preliminary accreditation to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

(Vocus) February 3, 2010

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (http://www. lcme. org/) has awarded preliminary accreditation to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (http://www. oakland. edu/medicine).

The LCME is the national accrediting authority for medical education programs in the United States and Canada. To obtain preliminary accreditation, Oakland University filed an application with the LCME in August 2009 and was visited by an LCME survey team in November 2009. At a February meeting in Chicago, the LCME voted to grant preliminary accreditation to the school based on its survey team’s report.

“We are delighted that the LCME has recognized the quality and value of our team’s efforts to create a dynamic learning environment to produce highly competent, patient-centered doctors with a commitment to lifelong learning,” said Robert Folberg, M. D., founding dean of the medical school. “This important milestone keeps us on track to begin instruction in August 2011."

Along with providing new medical education opportunities for students, the school will help to create jobs and infuse the region’s economy with millions of dollars. It will also enhance medical care throughout the region by ensuring a future supply of physicians, advancing medical research and attracting top-level medical leaders and students from around the country.

“This is a historic day for Oakland University and for Southeastern Michigan as a whole,” said Dr. Virinder Moudgil, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Oakland University. “This significantly expands our commitment to the role higher education will play in the region and the state, and it shows that we’re ready and able to build an innovative, knowledge-based economy for the future.”

“Beaumont has long been a national leader in providing post-graduate residency and fellowship training for physicians,” said Ananias Diokno, M. D., chief medical officer at Beaumont Hospitals. “Our involvement in this new medical school will attract even more medical talent to us and to the region -- benefiting our patients and the communities we serve.”

As part of the OU-Beaumont partnership, students will receive instruction in basic sciences and research at the school of medicine on Oakland University’s campus in Rochester, and take part in clinical training and applied research at Beaumont Hospitals (https://www. beaumonthospitals. com/).

Operation of the school will be supported with revenue from tuition, commercialization of intellectual property, partner contributions, research grants and philanthropy.
