Since its inception in 1978, the award winning Harmony Festival has served the West Coast as “The Festival of the Future Now” by creatively synergizing a colorful mix of music and performance art with the latest trends in alternative health, spirituality and ecological lifestyles and technologies. This family-friendly event features a wealth of educational and entertainment experiences provided by more than 400 exhibitors and world-class entertainers.

The Festival features a stellar musical lineup headlined by Bob Weir and RatDog making their fist ever Sonoma County performance. A founding member of the iconic Grateful Dead, Bob Weir has focused much of his musical energy in the past 10 years on RatDog, which has become a jam-band fan favorite across the country – it turns out that Dead songs combined with rock-jazz grooves create an irresistible combination.

The Festival declares WAR, with the legendary conscious-rock/funk group and will be dancing with the music of Bay Area hit-makers Cake, the Latin groove / hip hop masters Ozomatli, legendary musician-activist Michael Franti & Spearhead, trance groove jammers Sound Tribe Sector 9, legendary Jam Band guitarist Steve Kimock featured with the fast rising New Monsoon, afro beat stylist Aphrodesia, and the pioneers of high altitude bluegrass, Marin’s own Hot Buttered Rum. Many more bands will be added to the lineup and announced soon. Festival attendees will be able to dance all day and well into the night, then enjoy an easy stroll to their tents in the nearby themed camping zones, ready to rock next day.

Alongside the multiple music stages, the Festival will feature a grand, artistically designed layout with major themed areas, each with its own visual identity appropriate to its content.

The Eco-Village: (50 exhibitors displaying cutting-edge green products, workshops in sustainable living, and engaging speakers all day in the 60-foot Earthdance Dome)

The Well-Being Pavilion: (what’s current in holistic medicine, nutrition, and fitness)

The Culinary Showcase: (hosted by Bauman College, the Culinary Showcase will feature cooking demonstrations and food sampling from over 30 restaurateurs and organic and natural food exhibitors)

Harmony Altar: (Located at the heart of the Festival, the 50-foot star-shaped Altar creates sacred space to inspire harmony and create peace within)

Beer and Wine Gardens: (comfortable socializing area featuring the best local wines and micro-brews)

Harmony Parade: (joyous celebratory mayhem – a grand Saturday afternoon celebration where our performance artists strut their stuff and everyone’s invited)

Camping Area: (includes reserved theme camps and general admission areas with bathroom and shower facilities plus a limited number of RV hookups; see website for details)

On top of the extraordinary daytime fun, with the new Harmony After Dark there’s something special happening every night. On Friday, the Festival will partner with the North Bay Bohemian newspaper to host the 2nd Annual North Bay Music Awards (Norbay’s), a Bammies-style music awards show in which Bohemian readers will vote on their favorite North Bay bands in 14 musical categories. Lifetime achievement awards will be presented to Doobie Brothers manager Bruce Cohn and Bob Weir. Winners will be announced and many of the nominees will be playing at various venues on the Festival grounds. (Confirmed performers include, Bob Weir & Ratdog, STS9, Steve Kimock, Hot Buttered Rum, The Velvet Teen, Stiff Dead Cat, Plum Crazy, and The Coma Lilies, with many more TBA.)

On Saturday the Festival will be pulsating late into the night with the spectacular Techno-Tribal Dance at the Grace Pavilion, featuring cutting-edge DJs and live musicians, aerialists, and circus performers, plus state-of-the-art multimedia and laser light shows. In addition, there will a variety of entertainment outside on the festival grounds under the evening stars and full moonlight.

This year, with an expanded musical lineup and on-site camping, the Harmony Festival will become the 3-day home to a vibrant community that is all about cultivating “What’s Next,” from cutting-edge environmental technologies, to the newest health breakthroughs, to the latest sustainable business models, to rising political and social justice movements, to up-and-coming performing artists. Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 21, 2006

Pyxix™ Corporation (http://www. pyxix. net), a diversified global media company, announced today the premiere of its new DocuPyx. com™ Document Channel™ (http://www. docupyx. com). Pyxix also announced the winners of the first documentary contest; these are being showcased on DocuPyx. com. Over a dozen winners were awarded cash for displaying their work.

In addition, Pyxix today announced a new comedy channel, ComedyPop. com (http://www. comedypop. com), and an enhanced horror channel, UrbanChillers. com (http://www. urbanchillers. com).

DocuPyx. com will benefit creators and viewers, observed Professor Pat Aufderheide, director of the American University's Center for Social Media, who was recently honored by the International Documentary Association. "Documentary filmmakers are searching for ways to reach new audiences over the Internet, without losing an ability to recoup their creative investment," she said.

"This documentary channel will be closely watched by both veteran and emerging filmmakers. It also promises to bring hitherto unavailable films to new viewers," Aufderheide said.

Pyxix Announces Top Winners Of Documentary Contest

Pyxix awarded the Grand Prize of its first documentary contest to Sheila Laffey for "The Last Stand--Heroes at Ballona Wetlands." The film highlights successful efforts by celebrities and ordinary citizens to save the largest natural wetlands remaining in Southern California. Ed Asner, Martin Sheen and Ed Begley, Jr. are among the activists.

Second Prize went to Kathy Huang for "Night Visions," which reflects on life and loss through the eyes of a young soldier returning from service in Iraq.

Video journalist Elmendorp is pleased that DocuPyx is enlarging the audience for video journalism. "In my opinion, the opportunities for documentaries via the Internet are still unexplored. DocuPyx is trying to change that, and I am honored to be part of the effort," he said.

Three of Elmendorp's video reports are now showing on DocuPyx. com:

Joseph Kony, Sudan: First press interview given by the elusive leader of the Lord's Resistance Army.

Night Commuters, Uganda: Tens of thousands of children travel hours every night to sleep in town and escape abduction by child soldier forces.

Kenya Drought: 3.5 million people in Kenya are facing starvation due to prolonged drought.

DocuPyx plays autobiographical work at P. O.V. Life

The Telling Takes Me Home, by Heather Caravan: Celebrates the music of Guy and Candy Caravan and their contribution to the Civil Rights movement.

Research Institute for Learning and Development of Lexington, MA is Awarded Boston Scientific Foundation Grant to Augment “Drive to Thrive” Project

Research Institute for Learning and Development of Lexington, MA is Awarded Boston Scientific Foundation Grant to Augment “Drive to Thrive” Project

In the current era of standardized testing, mandated by the federal “No Child Left Behind” legislation, the Boston Scientific Foundation grant is particularly meaningful, fostering the development of strategies to insure that students, particularly those with learning and attention difficulties, are not left behind.

LEXINGTON, MA (PRWEB) December 4, 2004

The Research Institute for Learning and Development (Research ILD) of Lexington, MA recently received a $9,500 Boston Scientific Foundation grant which will be used to augment the innovative “Drive to Thrive” project in collaboration with the Watertown, MA Public Schools.

“Drive to Thrive: Fostering Persistence, Effort, and Resilience” is a field research initiative designed to identify predictors of life success in students, especially in those with learning and attention difficulties.

Dr. Lynn Meltzer, Research ILD’s Executive Director and Director of Research, notes “The collaborative program currently in place in the Watertown Public Schools helps students develop learning strategies that foster effort, persistence and resilience, processes that are more important predictors of life success than IQ or skill level. The Boston Scientific Foundation grant will enable us to continue our efforts in Watertown, reaching as many students as possible.”

The Research Institute for Learning and Development (Research ILD), located in Lexington, MA, is a not-for-profit educational and research organization. Research ILD develops and disseminates research-based educational strategies to create pathways to success for all learners by conducting cutting-edge research and developing instructional tools that can be used at home and in school.

The Boston Scientific Foundation

Boston Scientific, headquartered in Natick, MA, formalized its charitable giving effort with the establishment of the Boston Scientific Foundation in 2002. As a medical device company dedicated to improving lives through innovation, Boston Scientific created the Foundation to support innovative programs that improve lives in two important areas: health and education.

The Foundation's education-related investments seek to improve educational opportunities and skill development for those at risk of not fulfilling their potential. Initiatives that target a clearly defined community or population, and that have a strong potential to produce measurable long-term improvements in health care and education are given priority.

The Foundation's recent award of a $9,500 grant to Research ILD is an affirmation of Research ILDÂ’s ability to develop and deliver workable educational learning strategies and Boston ScientificsÂ’ commitment to support those efforts.

About Research ILD

Established in 1995, the Research Institute for Learning and Development (Research ILD) is a not-for-profit educational and research organization dedicated to empowering students to “learn how to learn,” creating pathways to success for all learners. The goal of Research ILD is to improve the lives of children, adolescents, and adults with learning and attention differences by conducting cutting-edge research and developing instructional tools that can be used at home and in school.

At Research ILD, research-based educational strategies for successful learning and effective teaching are developed, evaluated, and promoted through research, program development, dissemination of instructional materials, professional development, and scholarship support for educational services.

For example, some of the learning strategies developed by Research ILD have been incorporated into the award winning “Brain Cogs: Test-Taking Survival” software, produced in collaboration with FableVision. “Brain Cogs” has won numerous educational awards including Media&Methods Awards Portfolio and District Administrator’s District Choice Award – Top 100 Products of 2002. The software was also chosen as a featured web resource for the PBS special “Misunderstood Minds.”

The Research Institute for Learning and Development is located at 125 Hartwell Avenue in Lexington, MA 02421. For more information about Research ILD please visit www. researchild. org, email RILD@ildlex. org, or call 781-861-3711.

Earthcycle Packaging Gains BPI Approval

Earthcycle Packaging Gains BPI Approval

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) announced today its approval of Earthcycle Packaging’s products. These products are derived from palm fiber—an annually renewable agricultural biomass. The BPI’s certification demonstrates that Earthcycle’s products meet the specifications in ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868 and will biodegrade swiftly and safely during municipal or commercial composting.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2006

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) announced today its approval of Earthcycle Packaging’s products. These products are derived from palm fiber—an annually renewable agricultural biomass. The BPI’s certification demonstrates that Earthcycle’s products meet the specifications in ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868 and will biodegrade swiftly and safely during municipal or commercial composting.

“Earthcycle Packaging provides a cradle-to-cradle, or earth-to-earth in this case, packaging solution,” stated Shannon Boase, president of Earthcycle. “Our products are made from palm fiber, an agricultural biomass that used to be considered a waste product and incinerated or landfilled. Now it is made into packaging that, after displaying and protecting products, returns to earth when composted.” Not only do Earthcycle products reduce the ecological footprint of the packaging by closing the loop and returning to earth, they reduce the environmental impacts associated with the disposal of the former waste product.

Increasing interest in diverting and composting food scraps is driving interest and use in compostable products. “Residential and commercial food scrap programs are growing in communities from San Francisco, CA to Prince Edward Island, Canada,” stated Steve Mojo, BPI Executive Director. By replacing ordinary plastic items with compostable products, such as those by Earthcycle, these programs are able to cost effectively divert and compost large parts of the waste stream, by simplifying separation and by helping composters improve product quality and reducing processing costs. “As the BPI list grows, it will be easier to implement diversion programs, especially for supermarkets, sporting events and festivals,” added Mojo.

For a complete list of BPI approved products, visit www. bpiworld. org/BPI-Public/Approved. html (http://www. bpiworld. org/BPI-Public/Approved. html).

Earthcycle offers earth-friendly packaging for fresh food, food service and garden products as well as providing custom solutions for clients. Earthcycle’s packaging is made from an annually renewable resource—palm fiber. Before the introduction of Earthcycle products, this agricultural biomass was a waste, discarded when the palm fruit is harvested throughout the year for its oil. Previously, the palm fruit husk was incinerated or landfilled. Now it is turned into Earthcycle Packaging, reducing not only the waste stream but the negative impacts of the burning and landfilling. The non-GMO palm fiber is molded to create FDA certified Food Grade packaging. Vancouver-based Earthcycle Packaging is a privately held company, established by experienced entrepreneur Shannon Boase. Ms. Boase was introduced to palm fiber packaging while managing a technology commercialization fund for the Malaysian government.

BPI is a multi-stakeholder group, involving people and organizations that produce, use or recover biodegradable plastic products. It promotes the growth of biodegradable plastics through education, use of scientifically-based standards and cooperative efforts with organizations in Europe and Asia.

In addition, visitors will have an opportunity to meet various local emergency management agencies and emergency supply vendors. During the event the Chef Instructors and students will conduct demonstrations in our kitchen classrooms located nearby.

Even in the darkest of times in a state where the people can be forced to go weeks without power it is possible to have higher quality meals. A charcoal grilled fish, which can be cooked either with charcoal or even on the family carÂ’s engine, while they are inside the car cooling down, might not be able to be accompanied by rice pilaf, but the school will show how to make a delicious corn relish with items from a properly stocked pantry. Ideas on how to have mayo and mustard available for sandwiches throughout a blackout will be shared. These items just might improve the quality of life, the school believes.

The Senior Community Relations Representative, Cletus Ford, stresses the quality of culinary education, “While the Le Cordon Bleu reputation for quality speaks for itself, at Orlando Culinary Academy our fundamental approach to all we do is to stress the value and importance of doing the right thing, the right way.”

The importance of career education is emphasized by the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics in April of 2005 when they stated that people who have had courses in commercial food preparation may start in a cook or chef job without spending a lot of time in lower-skilled kitchen jobs. Their education may give them an advantage when looking for jobs in better restaurants.

The Orlando Culinary Academy was established in January 2002 to bring the Le Cordon Bleu culinary arts program to the Orlando area. The Academy's association with Le Cordon Bleu represents a union of some of the finest in European and North American culinary arts training programs available today, resulting in a curriculum that is comprehensive, challenging and hands-on education. Le Cordon Bleu was founded in Paris in 1895 and it's name traces back to a high honor bestowed upon members of the Order of the Holy Spirit by King Henry III in the 1500's. The awarded medallion, called the Cross of the Holy Spirit, was suspended from a Blue Ribbon which is: Le Cordon Bleu.

The Orlando Culinary Academy is located off John Young Parkway at 8511 Commodity Circle, Suite 100, Orlando, FL 32819. Visit www. orlandoculinary. com for more information.

What's the Best Holiday Gift to Receive? For Some, It is the Gift of Fluency

What's the Best Holiday Gift to Receive? For Some, It is the Gift of Fluency

As shoppers spend their last days before the holidays rushing through retail stores looking for the "perfect gift" for loved ones and friends, the gift-of-a-lifetime became a reality for eight people at the Hollins Communications Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. These individuals acquired the ability to speak fluently after living with a debilitating speech condition, stuttering, that had robbed them of reaching their full potential. As participants in an HCRI stuttering treatment program, they chose to spend two weeks leading up to Christmas in intensive therapy working eight to ten hours a day-rather than partaking in holiday festivities and shopping trips. For these individuals, experiencing the joy of speaking smoothly and spontaneously is the best possible gift to receive for the holidays.

Roanoke, VA (PRWEB) December 21, 2009

As shoppers spend their last days before the holidays rushing through retail stores looking for the "perfect gift" for loved ones and friends, the gift-of-a-lifetime became a reality for eight people at the Hollins Communications Research Institute (HCRI - www. stuttering. org) in Roanoke, Virginia.

According to therapy participant and college student Kevin McAlpine of Arlington Heights, Illinois, HCRI's stuttering treatment was "hard work but extremely worth it." The December timing of therapy was ideal for McAlpine. He scheduled an interview immediately following his treatment program with an admissions representative of a prestigious college where he would like to transfer. He needed to complete the interview before the school closed for the holidays.

"I had a severe case of stuttering before coming to HCRI. The condition is degrading and extremely challenging. My stuttering affected me socially and I was afraid to talk to people. Now, I can speak fluently for the first time in my life," McAlpine said.

The physical capability to speak fluently is something that most people take for granted. Yet, three million people in the U. S. and 66 million worldwide live each day with a stuttering condition that serves as a barrier to education, social and career opportunities. Stuttering occurs when speech muscles inappropriately contract and "jump out of control" with too much force and abruptness during attempts to speak. Markers of stuttering include repetitions of sounds, syllables and words; prolongations of first sounds in syllables; and voice blockage when trying to talk.

There is no cure for stuttering; though, therapy can help. To treat the disorder, there are a wide range of approaches with the most common based on counseling to modify speech disfluencies. "Unfortunately, this non-systematic approach is only effective among 25 percent of those treated," said nationally recognized stuttering expert Ronald L. Webster, Ph. D., HCRI founder. "Additionally, the stuttering devices that have garnered recent media attention typically work in just 20 to 25 percent of cases."

In contrast, research shows 93 percent of HCRI (http://www. stuttering. org//results. php) clients attain fluent speech by the end of their 12-day treatment program. Follow-up studies indicate 70-75% retain fluency for the long term.

McAlpine, who is an aspiring writer and interested in politics, had six years of speech therapy in his home town while growing up. "For all those years, I went to speech therapy one day a week and it helped me a little bit. But the intensive regime at HCRI and the therapy tools they use are what it took to retrain my speech muscles to speak fluently," he explained.

"At HCRI, we address and treat the physical aspects of stuttering because research has shown us that stuttering is a physically based condition," said Webster. "We teach people skills that put them in full control of the speech. That's why our therapy participants achieve long-lasting fluency outcomes."

During treatment, HCRI clinicians teach clients how to replace distorted muscle contractions that occur with stuttering with new behaviors called "targets" that generator fluent speech. By reconstructing muscle actions that drive movements of the tongue, lip, jaw, soft palette, and breathing mechanisms, individuals who stutter learn how to speak fluently. Similar to other muscle-building and skill-training activities, through intensive practice muscle memory occurs, enabling clients to maintain fluent speech for a lifetime.

In addition, HCRI researchers have created new ways to use technology in therapy to make fluency skills easier to learn and therapy more interesting for clients. Specialized electronics developed at HCRI, including a Voice Monitor application for Apple's iPhone, provide accurate feedback to clients during the learning of fluency targets.

"The technology used during HCRI therapy made a huge difference. The computer tools provided clear, precise feedback about my speech and signaled whenever I needed to make adjustments," McAlpine added.

The non-profit Institute offers 17 stuttering therapy programs annually and has treated nearly 5,800 people from across the U. S. and 23 other countries. For more information, visit www. stuttering. org or contact HCRI at 540-265-5650.

New Magazine Promotes Health and Fitness for Central Coast Community

New Magazine Promotes Health and Fitness for Central Coast Community

SB Fitness, The Central Coasts Health & Fitness Magazine, sets vision of becoming the premier health and fitness magazine for the Central Coast.

(PRWEB) September 25, 2004

SB Fitness magazine is set to take on Santa Barbara by storm in 2005! The print publication, whose website launched in July 2004, is gearing up for the new year with a print publication scheduled to hit presses and be ready by November of 2004.

SB Fitness is a free monthly publication that covers health and fitness throughout the Central Coast area with a special focus on the Santa Barbara region. Each issue provides the best in fitness, nutrition, local events, and more. In addition, each issue is available online at www. sb-fitness. com.

"SB Fitness Magazine has created its own unique niche of focusing on health and fitness rather than the bar scenes, concerts, and the latest movies," said editor-in-chief, Doug Holt. "You won't find club reviews in our magazine, unless it deals with health and fitness. What you will find is the most complete and comprehensive coverage of health and fitness exclusive to the Central Coast area".

Santa Barbara is a "perfect" city, encompassing beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and nearly perfect weather. All of these attractions are located within a 30 mile radius.

"This area is currently flooded with excellent opportunities to engage in all types of fitness activities," explained Holt. "At SB Fitness, we believe our readers really care about their health and fitness. Santa Barbara has perfect weather conditions most of the year, incredible outdoor activities, budding fitness companies, and talented trainers that bring the best of fitness practically into our back yards. They just need a publication that tells them what is going on in the area, how to get into and stay in the fitness lifestyle many of us already enjoy and that's why SB-Fitness Magazine was created".

The magazine is free to the public and is supported by donations and advertising, which ranges from $50-$5000. Advertisers may supply their own ads or have SB Fitness create an ad for them at a small additional fee. SB Fitness believes in providing its advertisers with maximal exposure for their ad dollars. Each ad is placed online and advertisers may take advantage of package deals to include banner ads as well. Businesses that wish to reach fitness and health enthusiasts should consider advertising in SB-Fitness Magazine.

"The goal of SB Fitness Magazine is to encourage the community to take action in improving the quality of their lives," said Holt. "We believe in providing the community with the education, information, and resources to make it easy to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. Whether you are new to exercise or are a veteran tri-athlete, SB Fitness was created not only to help individuals get better, but to create a community they belong to."

Zombies, Bots and Botnets – Computer Attacks on the Rise

Zombies, Bots and Botnets – Computer Attacks on the Rise

80% of spam comes from Zombies, personal computers compromised by trojan horses and controlled by hackers as part of a ‘Botnet. New eBook "Help! Something's Got Hold of My Computer and It Won't Let Go!" fights back.

Tigard, OR (PRWEB) March 20, 2005

Failure of computer users to patch and harden their systems fuels spam, spyware and password stealers.

New eBook "Help! Something"s Got Hold of My Computer and It Won"t Let Go!" helps computer users protect themselves from the newest forms of attack as well as Phishing, Identity Theft, Password Stealers, Trojan Horses, Browser Hijack Objects and other Internet Nasties

Eighty percent of spam comes from Zombies, personal computers compromised by trojan horses and controlled by hackers as part of a ‘Botnet.

Do you ever get angry at the hundreds of spam emails that clog your inbox? Your computer may be the one thatÂ’s sending it!

Thousands and thousands of computers are "Zombies," part of a vast network of ‘Botnets of compromised personal computers controlled by hackers without the owner’s knowledge or permission, according to Sandvine, a computer network management firm.

Hackers are renting out their ‘Botnets for between $500 and $1,000 so that spammers and other hackers can’t be shut down by their ISPs because each compromised computer uses their own ISP to send spam.

Innocent owners of the Zombies risk losing their ISP accounts if their machine is traced as a source of spam.

Most computer users donÂ’t keep their machines patched with the latest software that can prevent these attacks and so are vulnerable to hackers, trojans and backdoors.

The new eBook, "Help! Something's Got Hold of My Computer and It Won't Let Go!" (available at http://HelpProtectMyComputer. com (http://HelpProtectMyComputer. com)) contains tools, fixes and education to prevent hacking, phishing, browser hijackers and many other forms of attacks on PCs.

When Steve Freedman turned on his new computer and connected to the Internet, he expected to see the CNN web page. Instead he got a porn page. When he changed his home page back to CNN, the porn page came back every time he rebooted his computer.

Like hundreds of thousands of other surfers, his computer had been hijacked by something called a "Browser Helper Object" (BHO) better known nowadays as a Browser HIJACK object – a nasty little piece of spyware.

BHOs originally were developed by Microsoft to extend the capabilities of Internet Explorer. The problem is that the Bad Guys have learned how to use them to change Internet Surfer"s home pages, install password stealers and copy their keystrokes when they are doing their online banking.

Spyware is so common that over 90% of computers are infected with it. (1) At Dell, Inc. 15% of service calls are related to spyware problems, up from 2% in 2003. (2)

But unlike most people who are attacked by BHOs, Steve is a Webmaster, computer geek and an educator.

"I got mad that some hacker jerk had hijacked my computer. While I was researching how to fix it on the Web, I found out how prevalent this exploit was, and also found great resources for fighting back," says Steve.

"I decided to write an eBook that anyone, even computer Newbies, could follow to clean their computers and prevent future hijackings. I knew that Newbies needed lots of pictures (screenshots) and plain talk, not technobabble, so that they felt secure every step of the way. I also built in a lot of interactivity, to make it fun."

"Even most Computer Wizards haven't taken these simple steps to harden their computers against these malicious attacks. People and businesses really can't risk losing all their photos and emails and business information, but they don"t know what to do. This eBook will help them."

"Help! Something's Got Hold of My Computer and It Won't Let Go!" is a short but information packed eBook available for download at http://www. HelpProtectMyComputer. com (http://www. HelpProtectMyComputer. com). It has vulnerability tests, awareness education and fixes for many Windows and Internet Explorer vulnerabilities and resources that will be appreciated by beginners and advanced computer users.

Mr. Freedman is available for TV, Radio and Press interviews. His engaging, non-technical style and ability to communicate complex information in an understandable way makes him an ideal interviewee.

About the Author

Steve Freedman, co-owner of Archer Strategic Alliances has been a Webmaster for more than seven years. His interactive websites have won Golden Web Awards, and he has done presentations for the Public Relations Society of America, Portland Metro Chapter, the Native American Business Alliance, MARSA (Marketing and Sales Association) and many other organizations.

Many of Mr. Freedman"s clients are at the top of the Search Engines.

Mr. Freedman has been interviewed numerous times on radio and television in his role as Director of the City of Portland Metropolitan Human Rights Center; Assistant Director, Donor Recruitment, American Red Cross (news - web sites) Blood Services, Oregon Trail Chapter; Founder, Oregon Uniting, a racial reconciliation non-profit.

Traveling by Train a Great Alternative to Ease Air Travel Frustration

Traveling by Train a Great Alternative to Ease Air Travel Frustration

IgoUgo. com: "2008 'The Summer of the Train'"

NEW YORK (PRWEB) April 14, 2008

-- The editors of IgoUgo (http://www. igougo. com (http://www. igougo. com)), one of the most popular online travel communities in the world, believe the summer of 2008 may be the summer for train travel for Americans.

-- Tapping into its community of savvy travelers, IgoUgo's editors have pulled together tips, advice and itineraries for travelers looking for something other than the traditional fly-in summer vacation.

-- This information can also be found by visiting the IgoUgo blog: http://www. igougo. com/travel_blog (http://www. igougo. com/travel_blog)

Plane vs. Train

-- The U. S. airline industry received the worst score ever recorded in the most recent Airline Quality Rating (AQR) study. In the same study, consumer complaints were up 60 percent over last year.

-- Americans may be increasingly more open to the idea of train travel. In 2007, Amtrak reported more than 25.8 million passengers, representing the fifth straight year of record ridership.

-- More than 70,000 people ride on an Amtrak train each day.

-- IgoUgo editors believe in many cases, Amtrak is a convenient alternative - with intercity passenger rail services to more than 500 destinations in 46 states.

Train Travel More Energy Efficient

-- The US Department of Energy found that Amtrak - on an energy-consumed-per-passenger-mile basis - is 18 percent more energy efficient than commercial airlines.

-- IgoUgo editors suggest that while not every train trip is more energy-friendly than flying, it can be an added consideration when planning for a family vacation.

IgoUgo Train Travel Tips

Thinking about a train trip?

-- Consider taking the train on long trips when you have kids in tow; it can be much more relaxing than driving and a better opportunity to spend quality time talking or playing cards.

-- Check to see if you're visiting a city with a historic or notable train station; if so, arrive by train. Whether you're a train enthusiast or a total novice, it's a special experience to roll into a landmark like Philadelphia's 30th Street Station or Union Station in Los Angeles.

-- If your flight is cancelled, booking a spot on a train may be a good alternative.

-- If traveling a long distance, consider an air-rail trip: fly to your destination, then take the rail on the way home (or vice versa).

-- If you're a nature lover, consider a US route participating in Amtrak's Trails & Rails program, which provides educational opportunities to passengers, and research national parks and scenic areas serviced by trains. One example: Glacier National Park has two Amtrak stops with daily service in summer.

Booking your ticket?

-- Plan any train trip ahead of time; prices rise as departure dates near, and deluxe cabins sell out quickly.

-- Get a seat high enough to see out of the windows, and consider that choosing your seat's class might make the difference between an open-air ride and a spot behind sealed windows.

-- Consider that different classes may offer vastly different amenities; if a Western-style bathroom is important to you on train trips abroad, learn which class offers that before booking.

-- See if your hotel accommodation at your destination will provide train-station transfers; you may be able to avoid renting a car or taking an expensive cab ride upon arrival.

-- Travel light. You may not have much storage space or much time to get organized and disembark at your stop.

-- Bring a sleeping bag or blanket; trains can get cold at night.

All aboard?

-- Make sure you know what time meals are served in the dining car, and arrive early to get a spot. You'll most likely share a table with other passengers. If you don't feel like being social or are a picky eater, pack your own food.

-- If you become frustrated by delays, remember to think of your train ride as a "trip within a trip" or "just as much a part of the vacation experience as the actual vacation itself," in IgoUgo members' words. Relax!

-- Do not lose your ticket--some rails will collect them well after you board.

-- Listen carefully to station and train announcements, or you might miss learning of delays or departures. Some announcements are made only once.

-- If you're on a stopover or day trip, double-check the departure board when you arrive at the train station so you know at what time you must return.

IgoUgo Train Travel Itineraries

-- For some people a train trip is their destination, but for those who need to plan a route, IgoUgo is also a great place to research train travel itineraries.

-- Here are some of IgoUgo members' favorite train travel trips and IgoUgo editor's "top" list:

-- St. Petersburg to Shanghai on the Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian Railways

-- Auckland to Wellington on the Tranz Scenic Overlander

-- Zurich to Vienna on the OBB

-- Kalka to Shimla on the Shivalik Deluxe Express Toy Train

-- Tokyo to Nagano on the Shinkansen

-- San Francisco to Chicago on the Amtrak California Zephyr

-- Fairbanks to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad Denali Star Train

To celebrate train travel, Amtrak is holding its first annual National Train Day on May 10, 2008. More information can be found at www. nationaltrainday. com.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 21, 2008

We Boomers are on top of the world, aren't we? Then why are so many of us feeling lost and alone in our own maze of confusing questions, emotions and physical problems?

"In midlife, says Joyce Dillon, RN, MN, founder of Healthy Living & Balance Institute, most people experience some physical, relational, professional or psychological changes which often occur in the form of an unhappy marriage, affairs, or divorce; or they experience anxiety or depression that may have no clear source; and/or discontent with careers.

Also during this time, Dillon says, mid lifers may begin to notice "a calling" which is our soul urging us toward our authentic life of enhanced purpose and meaning, and they need support to understand their experience and answer this "calling."

Chronotherapy Helps Lung Cancer Patient on the Road to Recovery

Chronotherapy Helps Lung Cancer Patient on the Road to Recovery

Olszowka was diagnosed with lung cancer on New Year's Eve, 2002. The prognosis was very grim: her disease had advanced to Stage four and was inoperable. Though Olszowka was told she had months to live, she decided she was going to fight the disease, and ultimately found her way to cancer specialist, Keith Block, MD, where she received chronotherapy as part of her treatment plan. Today, she is doing very well and enjoying her two children and six grandchildren.

EVANSTON, IL (PRWEB) November 8, 2005

Margaret Olszowka was diagnosed with lung cancer on New Year's Eve, 2002. The prognosis was very grim: her disease had advanced to Stage 4 and was inoperable. Doctors at a very well known university hospital told her there was nothing they could do for her. They didn't even offer chemotherapy as an option; she was told she had months to live. However, instead of giving up, she decided she was going to fight the disease, and ultimately found her way to cancer specialist, Keith Block, MD, where she received chronotherapy as part of her treatment plan. Today, she is doing very well and enjoying her two children and six grandchildren. She wants the world to know about the role chronotherapy played in her survival in the hopes of helping other cancer patients.

What is chronotherapy? Chronotherapy takes into account how our body's natural rhythms' impact our ability to process medications. Patterns like sleeping, menstrual cycles, even our physical response to the changing seasons, are different for everyone. In the old days we called these biorhythms. Today, doctors are finding that understanding a patient’s biorhythms, and coordinating the timing of their medical treatments to these biorhythms, can profoundly affect the outcome of their treatments. This is called "chronotherapy."

“Every drug has an optimal time when it is least toxic and most effective," says Keith Block, MD, editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, and Clinical Professor, Department of Medical Education, at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago (UIC), and at the Department of Pharmacology. For cancer treatment, this is determined by several factors, including the biological uniqueness of the particular drug being given, the time when the specific type of cancer cells divide the most, when the normal healthy cells of the patient generally divide the least, the patient’s circadian clock and individual rest-activity cycles, and even the time zone the person resides in."

According to Dr. Michael Smolensky, co-author of the book The Body Clock Guide to Better Health, "When cancer medications are given in a chronobiological manner, patients may be able to tolerate higher, more potent doses than would be possible otherwise."

“This method of administering chemotherapy is revolutionary and has demonstrated in large randomized trials its potential to improve survival,” states Dr. Block. ”We have found that often patients receiving chronotherapy reduce what would have been recurring side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. This is important because the debilitation caused by chemo can cause patients to reduce or even stop treatments that could otherwise help them win their battle with cancer.”

Chronotherapy is being widely researched around the world: There are over 62,000 references in PubMed (the National Institute of Health’s archive of biomedical and life sciences journal articles) about chronobiology (how biology is affected by timing) and over 500 scientific articles specifically about chronotherapy. The National Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) devoted an entire web cast for doctors on chronotherapy.

So why isn’t chronotherapy used more widely? One of the main problems has been logistics – figuring out how to deliver chemotherapy in exactly timed doses. “Portable infusion pumps may hold the answer,” explains Gerald Sokol, MD, an oncologist with the division of oncology in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Dr. Block has brought technology to the U. S. that administers chemotherapy via a pump designed to precisely time up to four channels of infusion simultaneously to the individual needs of a patient. Highly portable and small enough to fit in a fanny pack, patients are able to maintain full mobility, play sports, and enjoy a full night's sleep – while receiving their specifically timed cancer therapy.

About the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care and Optimal Health:

The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care and Optimal Health, located in Evanston, Illinois, was founded in 1980 by Penny and Keith Block, M. D. with a focus on treating the patient as a whole person, not treating just the diagnosis or symptoms. The Center's research-based treatment integrates an innovative approach to the best of conventional medicine with scientifically sound complementary therapies -- therapeutic nutrition, botanical and phytonutrient supplementation, prescriptive exercise, and systematic mind-body strategies -- to enhance the recovery process. Block has pioneered this "middle ground" approach to cancer care and optimal health – designing a total treatment plan that is tailored to the precise needs of each patient, using a unique set of clinical and laboratory assessments. The Block Center is breaking new ground with the creation and development of Cancer Rehab as an innovative treatment modality, and is currently the only private North American medical center using chronomodulated chemotherapy. Dr. Block was recently appointed to the US National Institutes of Health’s PDQ Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Editorial Board in Bethesda, MD. While the Block Center is a full treatment clinic, it is involved in collaborative research with university facilities in the United States and Israel (www. blockmd. com).

Edward Norton, John Grisham Support Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust

Edward Norton, John Grisham Support Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust

With help from Edward Norton, John Grisham, and grants, the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust in Kenya is supporting 14 primary schools and providing running water and electricity to the local dispensary, and planning to employ a doctor. The Trust is now employing 30 game scouts to assist the the Maasai landlords in creating conservancies in the Group Ranch.

Northridge, CA (Vocus) January 22, 2007

The Maasai Foundation of East Africa fundraisers feature a lion as guest of honor.

The lion's name is Jabari, meaning brave in Kiswahili. Jabari was born in a zoo where his mother abandoned him, and Rick Kelly rescued him.

It was certainly a big surprise for our 200 member audience to see Jabari entering the Cabrillo Art Centre in Santa Barbara. We wanted to make a point: lions are beautiful and powerful animals. They are on the edge of extinction and we need to do our best to save them. Jabari helped deliver that message.

Two other guests of honor:

Edward Norton, who has generously supported with Cartier our Simba Project, kindly introduced Luca and Samson in the New York fundraising: thank you Edward.

John and Renee Grisham participated too and made an extremely generous donation: thank you John, thank you Renee.

Samson wanted to thank both Edward and John personally, and presented them with a "stick" of command, "orinka" in Maa. It is the stick that chiefs use in all their meetings.

We would like to thank all who participated in the two dundraising events. The Maasai Foundation of East Africa exceeded its goal of raising $100,000. Amazing, to say the least, and we must give a special thank to Jeff and Debra Miller, John and Renee Grisham, Ken Coe, and Phil Osborne for their incredibly generous donations.

Things done and things to do

This year the Trust has accomplished a lot, with grants from The MFEA, conservation fees from Campi ya Kanzi and other donations.

Schools: Through donations and through the conservation fees paid by Campi ya Kanzi guests,   we are now supporting all the 14 primary schools which are in the Group Ranch.

We have six secondary level scholarships running and another four to be offered to the best

two boys and two girls of the 2006 academic year.

We are employing 20 teachers, 2 cleaners, and 1 cook.

Projects: We would like to increase the number of teachers employed, to guarantee a good

level of education to all kids. One teacher costs $2,600 per year: quite a big donation

for a single donor, but think what this will accomplish: at least 30 kids will receive

  proper schooling.

We would like to build a private school, where to provide better education through the

teachers currently employed. This project is likely to be donated by a generous agent of

Campi ya Kanzi: it will cost about $98,000.

Please keep supporting us with the secondary level scholarships: they are the most meaningful.

Only 3% of the Maasai of our Reserve can afford to get to high school. It costs $750 per year,

for four years, to send a pupil to high school.

Finally we would like to be able to offer one university scholarship a year. Depending on

the discipline studied, the cost would be between $7,000 to $25,000 for four years of

university just for tuition, not including housing and extra fees.

Health: We are about to complete the project of providing running water and electricity to   the local dispensary. The well was dug successfully and good water found. See the installation

  of the pump here below.

Thanks to the funds just raised we will be able to build the electricity room and to install

the solar panels, inverters and batteries. We believe this is the most meaningful project the

Trust is accomplishing in its 6 years existence. Proper health will help save the lives of

many children. Thank you all who have participated and supported this project.

We are going to employ a doctor at the dispensary: we are seeking sponsorship of his salary.

  It costs $800 a month.

We would like to be able to accommodate the many volunteers who have offered us their help:

doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, students. It would cost $60,000 to build a house capable

  of hosting 8 people.

Conservation: probably the sector that needs our most attention.

Kenya has triplicated its human population in 40 years. Wildlife population is believed to have

been decimated in the last 50 years of the 20th century. The numbers speak for themselves.

Regardless of our successful efforts during our 10 years presence in the Chyulu Hills we need

to do more. This land needs to be protected.

We have been asked by the Maasai landlords to assist them in creating conservancies in the Group

Ranch. This is the biggest reward for Luca: the desire to preserve wilderness, wildlife and

culture is now rooted deeply in the community.

Please support us to achieve this crucial goal.

The Trust is now employing 30 game scouts. It costs $1,440 a year to employ a game scout.

Rains and Wildlife

This year we have been blessed by an amazing rainy season. The Chyulu Hills are wonderfully green; trees and grass are lush and healthy. Elephants have been coming closer and closer to the camp.

The other day we enjoyed an unforgettable game drive: we saw a leopard below Okoikuma, the lookout hill where we enjoy a fabulous view of Kilimanjaro. One minute later we saw a lioness and just before reaching camp another lioness with cubs.

The Maasai Foundation of East Africa (http://www. maasaifoundation. org (http://www. maasaifoundation. org)) is a US 501 c (3) nonprofit corporation that has supported the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust with grants for wildlife conservation, medical and educational projects.
